Ex-Pa. turnpike official sues over patronage claim
HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — A former Pennsylvania Turnpike official has sued the turnpike commission, claiming he was fired because he wouldn’t submit to influence-peddling.
Robert Wallett sued the commission and two high-ranking officials claiming he was demoted in 2003 then fired last year because he wouldn’t favor politically connected contractors.
Wallett claims he was fired from his job as facilities director because he would not recommend well-connected consulting firms for turnpike construction projects. He says he was often overruled and less-qualified companies got contracts because of their political clout.
Turnpike spokesman Carl DeFebo declined comment on the suit because it is in litigation.
Wallett is seeking back pay and unspecified damages.
