The Catholic Diocese of Youngstown has accepted a recommendation from parishioners and pastors to rename two sets of merged parishes, the diocese announced.

The mergers were effective Oct. 7.

St. Vincent de Paul Church in Vienna and St. Bernadette Church in Masury have merged with the new name St. Thomas the Apostle Parish. Both church buildings will be used until a new one is built, the diocese said.

The Rev. Nick Shori said neither building is big enough to house both parishes, and the buildings are not in good shape. The new building, he said, will be built on property next to St. Vincent de Paul’s.

The mailing address for the new parish is St. Vincent de Paul Church, 4453 Warren Sharon Road, Vienna.

St. Catherine Church in Lake Milton and St. James Church in North Jackson have merged with the new name Our Lady of the Lakes Parish.

Both buildings will remain open, so the parish will have two worship sites. St. James Church at 50 Rosemont Road, North Jackson, is the official mailing address.

The diocese is continuing with a reconfiguration plan that will result in more mergers. It is expected to be finished in two years.
