Wild horse roundup set to begin in NW Colorado

MEEKER, Colo. (AP) — A roundup of wild horses is set to begin in northwestern Colorado, over the objections of animal advocacy groups.

The U.S. Bureau of Land Management plans to start herding the horses near Meeker into corrals using helicopters on Monday afternoon. Over the coming days, the agency hopes to gather about 140 horses that have moved outside of public land designated for wild horses.

Groups including the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals filed a lawsuit last week to try to stop the roundup.

BLM spokesman David Boyd said the case includes specific objections to rounding up the approximately 60 horses in the North Piceance area. With the lawsuit pending, Boyd said the BLM will not gather horses there for now.
