Ray Charles is the subject of a new two-hour profile, “Ray Charles’ America”
Ray Charles is the subject of a new two-hour profile, “Ray Charles’ America” (Tuesday at 8 p.m. on Bio). The special will include what the channel describes as “unprecedented access” to the singer, who died in 2004. Wonder if he’ll talk about some of his TV appearances, such as these five:
v“Saturday Night Live” (Nov. 12, 1977): Ray hosted the show and appeared in several sketches, including one involving a painful interview with “Tom Snyder” (Dan Aykroyd).
v“The Cosby Show” (Oct. 10, 1985): Ray isn’t in the episode, but it contains the memorable scene of the Huxtable clan lip-synching his hit “The Night Time Is the Right Time” as a 49th anniversary present for Cliff’s parents.
v“Who’s the Boss?” (Feb. 3, 1987): In the episode, entitled “Hit the Road, Chad,” Samantha (Alyssa Milano) is thrilled when Ray, who’s Angela’s (Judith Light) new client, wants to record a song Sam’s boyfriend Chad (Scott Grimes) wrote especially for her. Until she catches Chad cheating on her.
v“St. Elsewhere” (Feb. 4, 1987): The night after Ray appeared on “Boss,” here he was again, this time in an episode of the medical drama unfortunately titled “Jose Can You See?” He played Arthur Tibbits, a blind street person who wants to be admitted to the hospital, even though he isn’t really sick.
v“The Nanny” (1997-98): In four episodes (including “The Hanukkah Story”), he played Sammy, the fianc of Fran’s (Fran Drescher) grandmother Yetta (Ann Guilbert).
