No. 19 South Carolina 35, No. 1 Alabama 21

COLUMBIA, S.C.

Stephen Garcia threw three touchdown passes and Marcus Lattimore had two clinching TD runs as South Carolina stunned Alabama. The Crimson Tide had won 19 straight game since losing the Sugar Bowl after the 2008 season to Utah. But the Steve Spurrier’s Gamecocks (4-1, 2-1 Southeastern Conference), who beat a top-ranked team for the first time in five tries, used the Alabama formula of cashing in chances and shutting down the run to pull off the upset and make themselves a factor in the SEC title chase.

No. 3 Oregon 42, Washington State 23

PULLMAN, WASH.

LaMichael James scored three touchdowns, including an 84-yard scoring reception, and Oregon shook Washington State in the second half. Coming off a big home win over Stanford that flew the Ducks past Boise State in the AP Top 25, Oregon struggled to make just enough plays to hold off the pesky Cougars.

Jeremy Avery ran for three TDs, Kellen Moore passed for three more and the defense forced four turnovers to lift Boise State.

FORT WORTH, TEXAS

Andy Dalton threw for a season-high 270 yards and three TDs a week after his worst game of the season and TCU recorded consecutive shutouts for the first time in 55 years.

No. 8 Auburn 37, Kentucky 34

LEXINGTON, KY.

Cam Newton drove Auburn into position for Wes Byrum’s 24-yard field goal as time expired, lifting the Tigers. Newton ran for a career-high 198 yards and four touchdowns and deftly guided the Tigers (6-0, 3-0 SEC) 88 yards in the final 7:22 after the Wildcats had tied it at 34.

Oregon State 29, No. 9 Arizona 27

TUCSON, Ariz.

Ryan Katz threw for 393 yards and two touchdowns, sneaked across for another score and Oregon State held on to upset Arizona. The sophomore from Santa Monica, Calif., completed 30 of 42 against an Arizona defense that had been ranked No. 2 nationally, giving up 230.8 yards per game.

No. 10 Utah 68, Iowa State 27.

AMES, IOWA

Jordan Wynn threw for 325 yards and two touchdowns, Shaky Smithson threw a TD pass and caught another one for Utah. Eddie Wide added three touchdowns for the Utes (5-0, 2-0 MWC), who scored 31 unanswered points in the second quarter and racked up their most points since beating Wyoming 69-14 in 1983.

ARLINGTON, TEXAS

Ryan Mallett threw three touchdown passes in the first half for Arkansas and Tramain Thomas sealed the victory at Cowboys Stadium with an interception in the end zone on the final play.

GAINESVILLE, FLA.

Jarrett Lee tossed a 3-yard touchdown pass to Terrence Tolliver with 6 seconds left after LSU kept its final drive alive with a successful fake field goal, and the Tigers pulled out another wild victory.

COLUMBIA, MO.

Blaine Gabbert threw two touchdown passes before leaving with a hip pointer after three quarters and Missouri got several big plays on special teams along with stout defense in a Big 12 opener.

No. 25 Air Force 49, Colorado State 27

AIR FORCE ACADEMY, COLO.

Air Force added some air to the nation’s top-ranked running attack and Jonathan Warzeka returned a kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown.
