Chestnut Ridge Church of God, 7215 Chestnut Ridge Road, will present soprano Charlotte Ritchie in concert at 6 p.m. Oct. 24.

She began her career at 17 as a member of The Nelons, a Southern Gospel group. She recently released “Bridges Over Blue,” and another release, “Closer,” produced three top-40 hits on Southern Gospel radio, two top-20 hits and a top-10 hit in the inspirational market.

‘Eat, Pray, Love’

A discussion is planned at 7 p.m. Oct. 19 in the Ursuline Center, 4280 Shields Road, Prato Hall, on the book “Eat, Pray, Love” by Elizabeth Gilbert.

This book narrates Gilbert’s yearlong quest to bridge the gulf among body, mind and spirit.

Holiday project

Liberty Presbyterian Church, 1451 Church Hill-Hubbard Road, dedicated Christmas trees during worship Sept. 19.

The trees were a service project of Jesus’ Helping Hands Ministry, which will send the trees to U.S. troops stationed overseas.

They also collected comfort items to send.

The ministry gives the trees to AT&T Pioneers, a group of volunteers affiliated with the telecommunication company.

The trees are called “Hooah” Trees, which is military for “Heard — Understand — Acknowledge.”

90th year

Pleasant Grove Presbyterian Church, 3919 Southern Blvd., will mark its 90th anniversary during a service at 11 a.m. Oct. 17.

The Rev. Bruce Ballantine is interim pastor.

The church began in 1913 as Pleasant Grove neighborhood Sunday School, which outgrew meeting in members’ homes.

A building was completed in 1915 on Southern Boulevard, south of its present location.

Five years later, in the same building, Pleasant Grove United Presbyterian congregation was organized with 150 charter members.

The charter worship service was Oct. 17, 1920.

By 1925 the membership had grown and the current church was built at the corner of Southern and Midlothian.

Polish Madonna

Polish Youngstown Black Madonna Shrine Committee is working with St. Columba Cathedral, 154 W. Wood St., to renovate the cathedral baptistry into a shrine to Our Lady of Czestochowa.

The Rev. John Keehner, cathedral rector and pastor of St. Casimir Church, is involved in the effort.

In the Diocese of Youngstown parish plan, St. Casimir merged with the cathedral. St. Stanislaus Kostka and St. Joseph the Provider, Polish heritage churches, are represented in the Polish Youngstown organization.

A novena to Our Lady of Czestochowa will begin Oct. 19 at Sts. Peter and Paul Church and move to related parishes.

The devotion will conclude with a Mass on Oct. 27 at the cathedral at which St. Stanislaus Polish Choir will sing. A reception will follow.

First Presbyterian Church of Mineral Ridge welcomed the Rev. Cindy Carlisle as interim minister Sept. 15.

She relocated to the Youngstown area with her husband, Dave, in February.

The Rev. Mrs. Carlisle received a master’s of divinity from McCormick Theological Seminary and was ordained as minister of word and sacrament in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) in 2007.

She served as associate pastor for youth and families in Baraboo, Wis.

The congregation of Mount Calvary Pentecostal Church will conduct an installation service for District Elder C. Shawn Tyson as pastor-elect of Mount Calvary Pentecostal Church at noon Oct. 16 in Stambaugh Auditorium, 1000 Fifth Ave. He succeeds the late Honorable Bishop Norman L. Wagner.

Pastor-elect Tyson is an ordained and licensed minister of the Pentecostal Assemblies of the World, (PAW) Inc., headquartered in Indianapolis, Ind. His father, Bishop James E. Tyson, served Mount Calvary from 1966-70.

Pastor-elect Tyson, a minister for 27 years, comes from Christ Church Apostolic, Indianapolis, where he served in various capacities including executive pastor to his father and to his brother, the Honorable Bishop James. L. Tyson. He also served as the minister of music and youth pastor of that local assembly and international minister of music for the International Pentecostal Young People’s Union of the PAW. He has been active on local, regional, state, national and international levels.

His wife is evangelist Krista M. Tyson. Their son, Minister James E. Tyson II, attends Youngstown State University.

Speakers will include his father and brother, Bishop Paul A Bowers, Bishop C. Wayne Brantley and the Christ Church Apostolic Cathedral Choir, the music department of Mount Calvary directed by Arnold J. Wagner and Elder Darren Thomas.
