1871: The Great Chicago Fire erupts; fires also break out in Peshtigo, Wis., and in several communities in Michigan.
1918: American Sgt. Alvin C. York leads an attack that kills 25 German soldiers and captures 132 others in the Argonne Forest in France.
1934: Bruno Hauptmann is indicted by a grand jury in New Jersey for murder in the death of the son of Charles A. Lindbergh.
1945: President Harry S. Truman announces that the secret of the atomic bomb would be shared only with Britain and Canada.
1956: Don Larsen pitches the only perfect game in a World Series to date as the New York Yankees beat the Brooklyn Dodgers in Game 5, 2-0.

1985: Donald M. Glenn is found guilty of aggravated murder in the killing of Lt. Jerry Dragosin and attempted aggravated murder in the wounding of Lt. Eugene Woody outside the East Liverpool police station Aug. 21, 1984.
A 34-year-old McDonald man is arrested on charges that he strapped at least 26 village boys to a makeshift cross or electric chair at this Pennsylvania Avenue home and administered electric shocks to them.
1970: While raiding three numbers houses, Youngstown and Boardman police recover some of the $20,000 worth of suits taken in a September burglary of the Richman Brothers store in the Southern Park Mall.
Two members of Boy Scout Troop 84, sponsored by the Austintown Community Church, Eben D. Byers and David L. Mitchell, receive their Eagle Scout awards.
1960: Four burglars flee on foot after their car stalls when they attempted to leaving the scene of a burglary at the Big Four Restaurant on Salt Spring Road. They were confronted by Ray Catheline, a U.S. Steel security guard, who fired a warning shot as they ran.
Youngstown’s Central Square will be closed to traffic and parking from noon to 4:30 p.m. leading up to a visit by U.S. Sen. John F. Kennedy, Democratic nominee for president.
1935: Former Youngstown Mayor Joseph L. Heffernan announces his support for Michael J. Kirwan, Fourth Ward councilman, for mayor.
Otis Skinner, generally regarded as the “first gentleman of the theater,” will appear at the Stambaugh Auditorium under the auspices of the Youngstown Education Association.
