1858: The fifth debate between Illinois senatorial candidates Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas takes place in Galesburg.

1910: A major wildfire devastates the northern Minnesota towns of Spooner and Baudette, charring at least 300,000 acres. Some 40 people are believed to have died.

1960: Democratic presidential candidate John F. Kennedy and Republican opponent Richard M. Nixon hold their second televised debate, in Washington, D.C.

The TV series “Route 66” premieres on CBS.

1985: A $7 million, 240-unit apartment complex will be built on 26 acres in Austintown Township between Mahoning Avenue and New Road, just east of state Route 11.

The Ohio Corrugating Co. halts production and furloughs 57 workers as financial problems have prompted the longtime Warren firm to file for bankruptcy.

1970: Ground is broken for a $1 million office building at 1350 Fifth Avenue, on the site of the Col. Lloyd Booth residence, which has been razed.

1935: Two young women are being held in Niles Jail, charged with holding up Sam Ragazzo and cutting the pockets from his trousers with a knife to remove his pocketbook that contained five or six dollars.

Macedonians of the Mahoning Valley hold a ceremony to honor a man they call a hero, Vlado Tchernozemsky, who assassinated King Alexander of Yugoslavia on Nov. 9, 1934.
