Local cancer survivors, their families and caregivers are invited to attend Salem Community Hospital’s annual oncology seminar Tuesday at the Links Banquet Center at Firestone Farms, just off state Route 7. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., and the featured speaker, Regina Brett, will take the stage at 7 p.m.
Brett is the author of “God Never Blinks: 50 Lessons for Life’s Little Detours,” a New York Times best seller. The book is a collection of essays and stories about the lessons she learned along the detours of life, including her battle with cancer.
In addition, the seminar features health information, light refreshments and door-prize drawings. The event is free. Preregistration is required and can be made by calling the hospital’s public relations department at 330-332-7227.
Fall workshop

Help Hotline Crisis Center Inc. and Potential Development Program will have their second annual fall workshop, “In the Face of Adversity,” Oct. 15 at Antone’s Banquet Center, 8578 Market St. The cost is $15.
The workshop features Doug Merrill, president and founder of Power Up Foundation and author of the book, “Fighting the Demon of Suicide.” He will address depression and his experience working with high-school students, as well as issues facing a parent of a special-needs child.

Flu vaccine
Niles
The flu vaccine will be given to children only, age 3 to 18, by the Niles City Health Department from 2 to 4 p.m. Oct. 15 at Niles Senior Citizen Center, 14 E. State St. The cost is $3. Medicaid cards will be accepted. For more information, call 330-544-9000, ext. 163.
CPR, first-aid classes

American Red Cross of Mahoning Valley is offering several adult CPR and first-aid classes at its main office, 661 Mahoning Ave. NW. Adult CPR classes are 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. Oct. 13 and 18; first-aid classes will be 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Oct. 14 and 26.
The CPR course fee is $40 and includes a participant manual for each student to keep and American Red Cross certification upon successful completion. First-aid classes alone are $35. Baby-sitter training

The American Red Cross will offer baby-sitter training for youth ages 11 to 15 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 15. Locations are Grace Fellowship Church, 2150 Niles Cortland Road, Warren, and New Life Fellowship, 2250 E. Western Reserve Road, Poland.
The cost is $50 and includes a training handbook/CD set and emergency reference guide for each participant. Students should bring a sack lunch and wear comfortable clothes.

Diabetes session

Diabetes Health Education and Lifestyle Program for people with diabetes and their families will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Monday through Wednesday at Forum Health Northside Medical Center, Medical Education Building, classroom A.
