WEXFORD, Pa.
Thiel’s Kelly Barzak (Howland High) was named the Presidents’ Athletic Conf. volleyball player of the week for the second time after leading the Tomcats to a 5-1 record last week, including a 4-0 mark and the title in Nazareth’s Purple and Gold Invitational.
Barzak, a sophomore, finished with a 3.27 kills/set average and a 1.8 blocks/set average at the tournament, where she earned MVP honors.
For the week Barzak totaled 67 kills, 23.5 blocks (15 solo, 8.5 assist) and 19 digs in 23 combined sets while hitting a combined .402.
Thiel is 12-8, 4-2 PAC.
Punt, Pass & Kick

Eight young athletes won age-group division titles in the Lake Milton Browns Backers Punt, Pass & Kick competition, held at the Olde Dutch Mill Golf Course.
Winning boys are Mason Richardson (age 6-7), Lennie Davenport, Jr. (8-9), Preston Rapczak (10-11), David Chaney, Jr. (12-13) and Vincent Malone (14-15).
Winning girls are Morgan Donithan (8-9), Amy Ritchie (10-11) and Leah Leshnack (14-15).
Football doubleheader
YOUNGSTOWN
Both Ursuline and Cardinal Mooney are playing football at YSU’s Stambaugh Stadium Friday, but not against each other.
Tickets for Mooney’s game against Cleveland Benedictine will be on sale at the school from 8 a.m. through 3 p.m. through Friday.
Tickets for Mooney’s game will go on sale Friday at the stadium at 7:30 p.m.
Also, Mooney fans with reserve seats will be able to take their seats after the Ursuline game is completed.
Breeders Crown race
WILKES-BARRE, Pa.
Lucky Chucky and Muscle Massive have been made the favorites for this weekend’s $500,000 Breeders Crown for 3-year-old trotters at Pocono Downs.
Lucky Chucky is the 7-5 favorite from post No. 4 and Muscle Massive is 7-2 and leaves from post No. 7 in one of 12 Breeders Crown races Saturday with a total purse of $6 million.
Lucky Chucky has won three in a row since finishing second in the $1.5 million Hambletonian.
On the pacing side, Rock N Roll Heaven and One More Laugh each won an elimination race to advance to the $500,000 Breeders Crown for 3-year-olds.
Canadian bobsled champ awaits return
TORONTO
Olympic champion bobsledder Heather Moyse of Canada is uncertain when she’ll return to the World Cup circuit after injuring her ankle last month at the Women’s Rugby World Cup.
The dual-sport athlete was on crutches Tuesday during a promotional event for Canada’s bobsled and skeleton teams.
Moyse ruptured ligaments in her right ankle in the rugby tournament final. She hopes to be back for the bobsled World Cup season opener on Nov. 22-28 in Whistler, British Columbia.
Ex-boxer Mesi joins NY athletic commission
ALBANY, N.Y.
Two years after he lost his first political bout, former heavyweight boxing contender Joe Mesi has joined the New York State Athletic Commission as an unpaid deputy commissioner.
Spokesman Gabe Roth says Commission Chairman Melvina Lathan has 10 deputy commissioners around the state. They attend matches and help officials ensure that boxers and promoters are paid and that safety rules and decorum are kept.
US sends first swim team to Dubai
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.
Olympic champions Ryan Lochte, Natalie Coughlin, Aaron Peirsol and Rebecca Soni are among 37 swimmers the U.S. will send to Dubai for the short course world championships in December.
It will be the first time a USA Swimming team has competed in Dubai. The meet runs Dec. 15-19 at a new aquatic center.
Fourteen-time Olympic gold medalist Michael Phelps will not participate.
