Mushroom expert Walter Sturgeon will give a presentation at the Beaver Township Nature Preserve on Oct. 16.

The nature preserve is on state Route 165 near New Buffalo Road. The event is free and will begin at 3 p.m.

Open house planned

POLAND

The Western Reserve Joint Fire District will have an open house Sunday. The event is from noon to 3 p.m. at Station 91, 111 S. Main St. in Poland village. Fire engines and other safety equipment will be on display, and children’s activities are planned.

Film will feature visit of Pope John Paul II

NEW CASTLE, Pa.

The American Polish Central Committee of Lawrence County will show the movie “Nine Days That Changed the World — Pope John Paul II” at 5 p.m. Sunday at Holy Trinity Polish National Catholic Church, 1708 S. Jefferson St., as a part of the October celebration of Polish-American Heritage Month.

The documentary is about Pope John Paul II’s historic nine-day pilgrimage to Poland in June 1979 just before the disintegration of Communism in Eastern Europe.
