Household chemicals, electronics to be collected

NEW CASTLE, Pa.

PA CleanWays of Butler-Lawrence Counties and the Lawrence-Mercer County Recycling/Solid Waste Department are sponsoring a collection of household chemicals and electronics from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the Lawrence County Fairgrounds on Pa. Route 108, Hickory Township.

Pre-registration is required to participate and can be made by calling 866-815-0016 by Wednesday. Terms are cash only the day of the event. No personal checks will be accepted.

Fees are $3 per gallon for liquids and solids, $10 for propane tanks under 20 pounds and $15 for propane tanks larger than 20 pounds. Those wanting to dispose of batteries and electronics should call ahead of time for prices.

Acceptable materials also include aerosols, ammonia, antifreeze, arts-and-craft supplies, batteries, brake fluid, creosote, degreasers, drain cleaners, dry-cleaning fluids, electronics, engine and radiator flushes, fertilizers, fluorescent tubes and lights, herbicides, kerosene, latex paint, metal polish, mothballs, muriatic acid, mercury, oil-based paints, old chemistry sets, oven cleaners, paint thinner, pesticides, photography chemicals, pool chemicals, radiator cleaners, rodent poisons, rust inhibitors, solvents, transmission fluids and wood preservatives.

Unacceptable materials include ammunition, appliances, biohazardous waste, blasting caps, chemotherapeutic waste, construction waste, drugs and medications, explosives, firearms, fireworks, flares, gun powder, pressurized fire extinguishers, radioactive wastes, rubbish, regulated substances, smoke detectors and tires.
