SALEM

Karen Biery has written a new novel that will be launched next Tuesday.

Her first book, “Believe,” launched last year, included a reference to a monument in Salem’s Hope Cemetery for Goldie Bell Taylor, whose grave always has flowers.

Her new book, “Pieces,” she said, “is a totally separate story.”

The novel is based in Minerva and involves two 11-year-old boys who discover an Indian burial mound off the Great Trail, a series of real trails used by Native Americans.

The two boys see the skeleton of a young girl, and that the skeleton contained special stones.

But Biery’s story focuses on the stones that have “ominous power that is unleashed on the unfortunate one who finds it.”

The discovery will affect the fate of the two boys and eight other people.

“It’s a book of adventure, not just fun,” she said. She added, “It has life lessons for the readers.”

The themes, she said, “are jealousy, deception and greed.”

Part of her inspiration came from a trip to the United Kingdom with her husband, Jeff. They visited Stonehenge.

“There were all these burial mounds and arrowheads all over the place,” she said.

The book, she said, “is really designed for everyone. If it were a movie, it would be rated PG-13.”

She already is thinking of her next book, which may be a prequel to her first book.
