The Newport branch of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County is offering a free small-business seminar from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday. Members of SCORE, a small-business counseling firm, will address key topics such as business and marketing plans, finances and technology. A librarian will outline resources for business start-ups.

Health-care careers

Area residents interested in a career in health care are invited to attend a free Health Care Career Workshop from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 19 at Community Outreach Center Champion Presbyterian Church located at 4997 Mahoning Ave. NW.

The workshop will offer information on health information technology, medical billing and coding, pharmacy technician, electronic medical records and other career paths. Health-care employers, educators and career pathway representatives will be on hand for the event.

Dominion awards

Dominion East Ohio will award $100,000 to cities and community organizations that have made major contributions to economic and social revitalization in the company’s service area. Winners will be recognized in the March 2011 edition of Inside Business magazine.

Furniture showroom to open at mall

Designer Furniture Warehouse will open a new furniture showroom in the Eastwood Mall on Nov. 1. The store, in a 25,000-square-foot space adjacent to Sears, will offer upholstered living room furniture in a wide price range. The store also will sell beds, mattresses and a limited collection of dining room furniture.
