Dylan Gibbs showed intense focus to get a string through a buckeye for his buckeye necklace, which went well with the Ohio State jersey he wore to school that day.

During Buckeye Day, many students learned that their teachers and faculty were very talented musicians. Frank Ohl principal Dennis Rice (left) showcased his skills on the guitar and assistant teacher Mrs. Hutchinson showed off her singing voice during Ohio’s official rock song, “Hang on Sloopy.”

Students and teachers at Frank Ohl are big Buckeye fans.

The school celebrated everything buckeye — the state, the college football team and even the candy — Sept. 23, which was designated “Buckeye Day.”

Kristine Mazzella and Paula Hutchinson organized the day for students as the finale of a social studies lesson on states, where extra attention was paid to Ohio.

Before the festivities began, Mazzella quizzed the children on the history of the buckeye, and how and when Ohioans became known as Buckeyes. After the quick lesson, Frank Ohl principal Dennis Rice showed off his musical skills by leading the children in a sing-along rendition of “Hang on Sloopy.”

The room was plastered in Ohio State University colors scarlet and gray as the children had the rest of their day to eat candy buckeyes, create buckeye necklaces and watch videos of the Ohio State Marching Band performing Script Ohio.

It was evident that the classroom of fifth-graders was proud to be Ohioans.
