The Canfield Wrestling Club is preparing for another season on the mat.

The club is open to all young athletes in sixth grade or lower. Sign-ups will be held in the Canfield High School wrestling room Tuesday and Thursday at 6 p.m.

Practices will be held two to three times per week beginning Nov. 1. Matches begin Dec. 5 and continue until Jan. 30. “Wrestling is a great sport. I have heard over and over from coaches in football, baseball and other sports that the wrestlers seem to pick things up quicker, have good coordination, and are tough,” said head coach Dave Crawford.

“What I try to do as a coach is to make our kids better athletes by working on strength, quickness and agility. If they are better athletes, they are going to be better wrestlers, football players, etc.”

The club competes in the Canfield sectional of the Ohio Youth Wrestling Association. Beginning in December, the Canfield wrestlers will have the opportunity to compete against wrestlers from Boardman, Beaver Local, South Range, Salem, Alliance, Wellsville, United, Columbiana and West Branch.

Wrestlers are matched up by weight, age and experience so that everyone has as the fairest match possible.
