The Canfield Public Library capped off its summer reading program, Make a Splash - Read!, by honoring the program’s top readers Sept. 21. The library recognized one child from each age group from preschool through sixth grade.

Jane Adams, Canfield librarian, said the evening was to congratulate and recognize the top readers. She called each top reader to personally invite them to the celebration.

“This evening is a celebration and is all about congratulating and recognizing the achievement of these children for reading in the summer. The main focus of this celebration is the children and their achievements,” Adams said.

The program’s top readers attending the celebration included Kaleigh Williams, preschool; Emily Dew, kindergarten; Julia Mosher, first grade; Grace Rosko, second grade; Chris Cubick, third grade; Jillian Giovanni, fourth grade; Carly Piper, fifth grade and Taylor Bernard, sixth grade.

Rosko was recognized as having the highest number of hours of all participants with a total of 364 hours read during the summer program.

Before Adams recognized the top readers, she conducted two simple science experiments for the children and their families, including the dancing raisins experiment which involved a can of clear pop and a box of raisins.

She poured the pop into a glass and then added the raisins and the raisins proceeded to flow and “dance” from the top of the glass to the bottom of the glass, much to the amazement of the audience.

Adams then recognized each top reader and called the child up to the front of the library and presented him or her with a certificate with the number of hours read and a prize. Each reader also received a big round of applause from the audience.

Marlene Braunlich, president of the Friends of Canfield library, was also on hand to announce the winners of the organization’s fundraising basket raffle. The Friends of Canfield Library provided three baskets that library patrons could buy tickets to win during Make a Splash - Read! library events.

According to Braunlich, the raffle raised $298 for the library.

The baskets were filled with prizes and two of the baskets had Dr. Seuss book themes, which included “The Foot Book” and “I Can Read With My Eyes Shut.”

Carol, Stephanie and Samantha Scheckelhoff won the Dr. Seuss basket, Hailey Tomory won the tail basket and Terry Cessna won the foot basket. All were on hand to collect their winnings.

The evening celebration ended with cookies and punch provided by the library.
