Rash of burglaries

WARREN

“A lot of people went out to eat or shopping, and they came home to a break-in,” Lt. Martin Gargas said Friday.

In most cases, the thieves made off with television sets and jewelry.

The locations were 1600 block of Southern Boulevard Northwest, 1300 block of South Street Southeast, 3300 block of Dunstan Drive Northwest, 900 block of Garden Street Northwest, 1300 block of Bradford Street Northwest, 1000 block of Summit Street Northwest, 2700 block of Randolph Street Northwest and 1300 block of Adelaide Avenue Southeast.

No arrests had been made as of Friday afternoon.

660 meals served

SALEM

The Salem Thanksgiving Community Meal served about 660 turkey meals at the Memorial Building on Thursday.

Jeff Schoch, senior pastor of Abundant Life Fellowship in New Waterford and one of the dinner’s organizers, said Friday, “That’s a record as far as I can tell. ... I always expect a little more each year.”

Last year, the program served 630 meals compared with 481 meals in 1998.

“We had a good turnout and were very pleased with the veteran and new volunteers,” he said. “I’d love to see the dinner become more than just a once-a-year event.”

Firefighters honored

WARREN

Seven firefighters who rescued three women and a Warren police officer from a fatal 2009 house fire on Bonnie Brae Avenue Northeast were honored Friday at the Warren Fire Department: Capt. Jeffrey Younkins, Lt. Alfred Brown, Lt. Shawn Peura, Lt. Theodore Ray Jr. and firefighters Nick Radich, Marc Titus and Ed Dowell.

The firefighters received the Award for Heroism from the state fire marshal’s office for their response to an April 28, 2009, house fire that consumed a group home for three women.

Firefighters located the women and Officer Doug Hipple on the second floor and removed them. All four were badly injured, and Melissa S. Watson, 44, later died. Donna Cassidy, 52, Sheree J. Egry, 52, and Hipple survived.
