Kirk lemonade stand raises funds for feast

George Thomas (right) loved turning his “lemonade stand” sign upside down, so potential customers could come by and correct him. That, and Joey Hughes’s (left) megaphone marketing, brought the customers in.

There’s nothing like an ice cold lemonade to cool you off — in October.

Students at Lynn Kirk Elementary came up with a great way to beat the unseasonably warm weather on Oct. 28, as Kim Miller’s second-grade class opened their very own lemonade stand.

Although many students didn’t think handing over a quarter for a tall glass of lemonade made a difference, Miller begged to differ.

“All of the proceeds from our stand go toward buying supplies for pies that we’ll be donating to the Rescue Mission’s Thanksgiving feast,” she explained. “Earlier in the year, the students did chores at home and brought in $4 each to get us started. The lemonade stand provides the rest of our funds, and during Thanksgiving week, we walk the entire class down the road to Rulli Brothers where we buy supplies. The kids have so much fun with it.”

The pie donation has been an annual project at Lynn Kirk for 15 years, and last year’s project made an all-time high of 110 pies. Miller hopes this year they’ll do even better.

“We’ve preemptively stocked up on pumpkin filling, in case of a shortage, and we have enough to beat last year. So, we’re crossing our fingers,” she said.

As for the students, the lemonade sale was more of the focus than the Thanksgiving field trip. The boisterous marketing team of George Thomas and Joey Hughes loved shouting up and down the halls, “Lemonade stand! You love lemonade, so come and get it!”
