Civil War illustrations to be on display at Arms

Staff report

YOUNGSTOWN

A new exhibit featuring Civil War illustrations from Harper’s Weekly is on display at the Arms Family Museum.

The museum of local history is on Wick Avenue near Youngstown State University.

Reproductions of more than 1,000 illustrations will be on display at the museum through June 11.

Drawn by artists employed by Harper’s Weekly from 1861-65, the illustrations depict major battles and the despair and destruction experienced by people at that time.

Harper’s Weekly was a leading magazine during the era, and illustrations from the war were compiled afterward. They were later released as Harper’s Pictorial History of the Civil War.

The museum’s first floor will be closed Tuesday through Dec. 3 in preparation for the Memories of Christmas Past exhibit “All Dolled Up,” which opens Dec. 4.

The second will still be open with a dollar off admission from Tuesday through Dec. 3.
