Stocks open lower as Europe’s debt worries linger
NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks are sinking in early trading on Wall Street in a shortened session amid lingering uncertainty surrounding Europe’s debt troubles.
European stock markets and the euro are falling today as worries mount that Portugal will need cash from other European Union countries before its borrowing costs rise too high.
Tension between North and South Korea are also weighing on stocks. North Korea warned today that plans by South Korea and the U.S. to stage military maneuvers have put the Korean peninsula on the brink of war.
The Dow Jones industrial average is down 107, or 0.9 percent, to 11,079. The S&P 500 index is off 10, or 0.8 percent, to 1,188. The Nasdaq composite index is down 15, or 0.6, to 2,527.
