With the holiday season upon the village, one group wants to deck town hall with boughs of holly — and lights.

Organizers say they hope the second annual Lighting of the Village Christmas Celebration draws more than the 350 there last year.

The event begins at 6 p.m. Dec. 4 at Village Hall, 308 S. Main St., and more than 400 luminarias will line Poland’s downtown streets.

“So many people say it’s like [a] Dickensian atmosphere,” said Wilma Brumbaugh of the Poland Junior Women’s event organizer.

The nonprofit club coordinates events, such as the Halloween parade and Easter egg hunt. It also provides scholarships.

The Poland Seminary High School choir will perform as holiday lights are switched on at Peterson Park, at U.S. Route 224 and state Route 616 and 170, and the village hall.

“We are a community- service organization, and we really want this to be a community event,” said organizer Karen Biggs.

Santa also will make an appearance, arriving on a Western Reserve Joint Fire District truck, and cookies and hot cocoa will be served, said Laurie LaPlante.

The event is free, but the Junior Women’s Club will accept donations of time and money. Volunteers are needed to arrange and then pick up the luminaries. Any individuals or organizations interested are asked to call event coordinator Jeannette Albert 330-757-2488.
