One local band is doing its part to help those in need of a good meal even after Thanksgiving has passed.

Greg Johnson, singer for the Youngstown band The Package, said the group will perform Friday at the B&O Station and asks patrons to bring a canned good to the show.

Johnson said doors open at 9 p.m., and the group, featuring singer Karla Selton, will perform from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m.

Presenting a canned food product at the door will get patrons into the show for $5. Regular admission is $6.

All of the canned products will be donated to the Mahoning Valley Rescue Mission, he said.

“We’re just trying to help out any way that we can, do a little good for the rescue mission and all,” Johnson said. “It gives back to the community a little bit.”

He said Friday will be the fifth time the group has organized a day-after-Thanksgiving canned-food drive for the rescue mission.

“The mission is going to bring three barrels, so if we can fill those up, I’ll be happy,” he said. “Even if [people] can’t come to the event, they can come and drop cans off.”

Johnson said the band plays R&B and dance music and hopes the concert, in combination with a charitable donation, will draw a crowd.

“We have a lot of fans who follow us, especially when we do this,” he said. “I’m hoping we get at least 200 to 250 people.”
