Cancer survivor to soccer team leader
SEATTLE
Standing over the penalty kick, in the oddest of circumstances, Washington’s Jorde LaFontaine-Kussmann wasn’t a cancer survivor.
She was a goalkeeper, taking a penalty shot in the ninth-round of a shootout in the NCAA women’s soccer tournament with Washington’s season on the line.
LaFontaine-Kussman scored, part of Washington’s second-round upset of Portland in a shootout that eventually lasted 11 rounds. The Huskies went on to beat UC Irvine in double overtime last week and will next face Boston College on Saturday.
But the nerves of being the center of attention in a penalty shootout are mundane compared to what LaFontaine-Kussman previously faced.
Wolak replaces Gomez on Chavez Jr.’s card
ANAHEIM, Calif.
Alfonso Gomez has a torn ligament in his left elbow that will prevent him from fighting Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. at Honda Center next week.
Pawel Wolak will replace Gomez (22-4-2, 11 KOs), who withdrew from the Dec. 4 bout on Wednesday.
Chavez (41-0-1, 30 KOs) is among Mexico’s most popular fighters, drawing huge crowds and attention largely due to his father’s fame. The younger Chavez has fought mostly unimpressive opposition during his career, but has recently been angling for a move to tougher competition.
Report: No code violation in Ohio fire
LEBANON, Ohio
Officials say there’s no evidence that fire codes were violated when an Ohio raceway barn caught fire in December, killing two groomsmen and more than 40 horses.
In a report released Wednesday, interim State Fire Marshal Donald Cooper says he does not recommend any criminal or administrative charges in the Dec. 5 fire at the Warren County Fairgrounds in southwest Ohio, home to the Lebanon Raceway.
The groomsmen are believed to have been sleeping at the time of the fire. The fire marshal’s report says there’s insufficient evidence to find that the barn was occupied in violation of fire codes or that any violations caused the fire or helped it spread.
The report also says the fire is undetermined and that there is no indication of arson.
