Collection for veterans in nursing homes

A collection will be taken from noon to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday at Packard Music Hall for the 600 patients living in the state’s two nursing homes for veterans — one in Sandusky, an hour west of Cleveland, and one in Georgetown, 45 minutes east of Cincinnati.

Warren councilman Bob Dean is promoting the collection, along with members of the Warren police and fire departments.

Police officers and firefighters in uniform will collect items from vehicles as they pull up to the front of the music hall, which is at 1703 Mahoning Avenue N.W.

Among the items the nursing homes seek:

Heavy duty paper shredders, indoor and outdoor Christmas trees and decorations, refrigerators, 52-inch flat-screen televisions for dining rooms, large-screen high-definition televisions for common areas, a flat-screen wall-mounted television for a library, flat-screen televisions for resident rooms, mounting brackets for flat-screen televisions, indoor padded benches, blow-up Christmas decorations for front lawn, microwave ovens, laptop computers, Wii games, karaoke CDs, a color copier, large flower pots, gardening supplies, gardening hand tools, exercise equipment, electric razors, surge protectors, patio umbrellas, books on CD, CD players, Blue-Ray DVD players, companion radios, MP3 players, exercise bands, still cameras, video cameras and sweaters (male and female).
