Kennedy, Alden are repeat champions

Tim Kennedy became the first Warren Jr. Masters bowler to win the boys title for a third consecutive time following the conclusion of the 24th event at Freeway Lanes.

After six matches of head-to-head play for the girls, Morgan Alden defended her title to become a two-time winner in the girls’ division.

Kennedy took a three-pin lead after the first game and continued to build a little more distance after each match. Kennedy won seven of eight match-play games and saved his high game of 264 for the eighth and final match. His total pinfall was 1972.

Alden shared the lead after the first game with Marissa Simon and the two traded the top spot during the first four games. Alden took a 70-pin lead over Simon into the position round. Simon won the last match over Alden, 224 to 212, to earn the 30 bonus pins, but it was not enough to overcome Alden’s lead. Alden 1309 pinfall was the product of a 5-1-0 record.

Kennedy and Alden will receive a $200 scholarship and jacket. Runner-up Harry Illner won $100 in scholarship and third-place John Richards earned $60.

Simon earned $100.

Overall the tournament paid out over $900 in scholarships to various bowlers.

Chuck Welch was director of the Warren Jr. Masters, which also featured a Junior Gold regular event. The champion was based on the total scratch pinfall for 15 games. This year, Kennedy won a paid entry to the Junior Gold nationals, which will be held July 9-15 in Las Vegas.
