1985: Police are holding two Pittsburgh men who are accused of luring Richard Banyots of Girard to a North Side home where he was robbed before being driven to Pennsylvania and shot. His body was thrown in the Allegheny River.

Officials of the United Steel Workers of America Local 1197 will fly to New York to discuss the concerns of workers at Sharon Steel Corp. directly with Victor Posner, CEO and chairman.

The Youngstown Area United Way allocated $2.5 million to 30 agencies for 1986, an increase of almost $200,000 over 1985.

1970: Mahoning County sheriff’s deputies agree to accept half-pay for the next three weeks as the sheriff’s budget runs out of money.

Judge Joseph Donofrio tells the Caseworker Practitioners Association that the forgotten people in the work with alcoholism are the families of alcoholics.

1960: Internal Revenue agents raid the Log Cabin, a quiet country tavern near Warren, arresting five gamblers, including kingpin Tony Delsanter, former Jungle Inn operator. Gambling cash totaling $3,000 is confiscated.

The Rev. Lewis P. McCue, assistant director of “The Hour of the Crucified,” visits Youngstown to record four local choirs for possible future use on the show. He says “If Jesus Christ were on earth right now, he would be broadcasting on radio and probably have his own TV show.”

1935: Mayor-elect Lionel Evans asks the Mahoning County Medical Society to recommend three physicians, one of whom he will appoint city health commissioner.

Mahoning County’s $1,000,000 bond issue for construction of a psychopathic hospital fails to gain 65 percent of the vote by 315 votes.

Johnny McNicholas, the county’s oldest Democrat, dies at 100 at the home of a daughter, Mrs. John J. Lowry on Delaware Avenue.
