Austintown resident Kris Christmas spent her Halloween as a maid of honor, dressed as a gangster, in her sister’s spooky wedding.

Liberty natives Janice Fentress and husband, Ron, had not seen one another in more than 30 years before their engagement. The two dated for a short time during high school, but Fentress, who was two grades ahead of Ron, moved away to Hawaii in 1974.

Years went by and communication between the two were nonexistent. That was until the Internet helped bring them together again. Fentress messaged Ron on classmates.com and from there, their friendship was rekindled. Due to the distance, the two communicated through Facebook and occasional phone calls, but it was a traumatic event that brought the two face to face again.

Fentress’ father fell ill in March and she traveled back to her hometown to visit him. She needed a ride home from the hospital one night and Ron came through.

“She walked out the door of the hospital and I went, ‘Oh my, she is beautiful,’” Ron said. “I wasn’t gonna lose this one.”

By May, the two were engaged and searching for the perfect wedding date. Oct. 31 seemed ideal.

“Halloween just sounded like a lot of fun!” Fentress said.

The wedding was held at Marino’s Italian Cafe, in Austintown, with the reception following the ceremony. The two later took wedding photos at Liberty’s Church Hill Cemetery as a memento of the spooky wedding.

“Everybody thought I was crazy when I said, ‘Lets go to the cemetery,’ but it was just so appropriate,” Fentress said while laughing. “I mean what else would you do on Halloween?”

Fentress admits she never thought her and Ron would end up together after such a long time, but knew he was the one for her as soon they were reunited.

Ron’s feelings are mutual.

“I am really happy now. I feel like a different person,” Ron said.
