It was a night of Disney for students at North Elementary.
Eighty-two students in kindergarten through second grade attended the school’s Disney Family Night with their parents or guardians, engaging in activities such as decorating cupcakes, painting tiles, creating a story and watching a play.
“This is a great opportunity for parents to spend extra time with their kid, and it gets the parents in the school and seeing the teachers in a different environment,” said Principal Michael Masucci.
First-grader Dominic Klase said he liked his cupcake, decorated to look like an alien from the Disney/Pixar movie “Toy Story.”
Zach Donnachie, who is in kindergarten, painted his favorite Disney character on a floor tile.
“It’s Pow!” he said, meaning the character Lightning McQueen, who often says “Ka-Pow” from the film “Cars.”
Sara Donnachie, Zach’s mom, said she appreciated an evening event, rather than a program during the school day.
Reacting to Election Day results, many parents said they were “disappointed” by the outcome of the Poland school levy, which failed by a margin of 762 votes.
“There’s nothing I can do about” the vote, Sarah Donnachie said. “This school is great and does so much for the kids.”
The school district is essential to the area, said Jennifer Szolek, who attended Family Night with her daughter Kenzie Szolek.
“I’m disappointed. The schools builds the community, so it’s really important to have a strong school system,” she said.
The 3.9-mill, five-year additional emergency operating levy would have generated $1,485,900 annually.
North Elementary’s Family Night for third- and fourth-graders will be in the spring, Masucci said.
Several prizes, donated by local businesses, were awarded throughout the night, including Disney-themed cakes from Clarencedale Cake and tickets to an upcoming show at the Covelli Centre.
