2010 Hoops 4 Healing

The Federal League and the Northeast Buckeye Conference are collaborating to stage three nights of basketball contests in support of “Service Week” as promoted by the Ohio High School Athletic Association Foundation Nov. 22, 23 and 24 at various schools.

Varsity girls games will begin at 6 p.m. with the varsity boys’ games beginning immediately afterward.

Boardman will play Alliance in Boardman Nov. 24. Marlington will play at Fitch Nov. 24.

Tickets for the event are $5. All tickets will be sold at the door the night of the event.

Go on a Journey to Bethlehem

Disciples Christian Church will host a Journey to Bethlehem Dec. 4 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at its 565 Boardman-Canfield Road location.

The walk-through drama will feature a live nativity, marketplace and various stations where visitors can interact with people of the times.

Thanksgiving Eve service offered

Calvary Baptist Church, 1463 Shields Road, will host a Thanksgiving Eve Service Wednesday at 7 p.m.

Rev. Burl Jernigan will preach a message and the chancel choir will perform. Childcare will be available.

Take out dinner Dec. 2

Western Reserve United Methodist Church, 4580 Canfield Road, is hosting its Take Out Thursday Dec. 2.

The cost for dinner is $7 and includes stuffed chicken breast, mashed potatoes, green beans and brownie. No reservations are needed. Serving begins at 4 p.m. until sold out. Drive-through and pick-up are available.

Buy holiday baked goods Come to Western Reserve United Methodist Church’s community cookie walk Dec. 11 from 10 a.m. to noon at its 4580 Canfield Road location and forget about holiday baking. Cookies, homemade soups and crafts will be available.

The Lube hosts frozen turkey bowling contest

The Austintown Quaker Steak and Lube Æ is hosting a Frozen Turkey Bowling Competition Wednesday at 8 p.m. to raise money for the Second Harvest Food bank.

The Lube Æ will register teams of two up until the competition begins. Call 330-349-9464 and ask to speak with a manager to register your team. Registration is $10 per team. All monies collected will be donated to the Second Harvest Food Bank. The top three teams will take home prizes.

In addition to the competition, the Pre-Turkey party at The Lube Æ will feature live entertainment with DJ Dom.

On Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 25, Quaker Steak and Lube Æ will feature a Thanksgiving Day buffet. Call for pricing and reservations.

Railroad layout at local museum

The Western Reserve Modular Railroad Club is featuring its large modular layout at the National Packard Museum in Warren through Dec. 29.

Give the gift of sight at fundraiser

Help give the gift of sight at a fundraiser for the Cornea Research Foundation of America Sunday from noon to 2 p.m. at Cafe Capri on Market Street in Boardman.

Trendy Trousseau and Chloe’s Adornments will be featured at the event and there will be a Chinese auction.

Tickets are $20 per person and every ticket is automatically entered into a drawing for $100 worth of lottery tickets.

Pasta dinner benefit tonight

A pasta dinner fundraiser is scheduled tonight for Valerie Long Boston, a single mother of three and a five-year veteran of the U.S. Army who was diagnosed with stage IV colorectal cancer in 2008.

The dinner will be served between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. tonight in the Commons of Columbiana High School, 700 Columbiana-Waterford Road. Carryouts are available.

Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children at the door. The menu includes, pasta, meatballs, roll, salad, beverage and dessert.

A Chinese auction, 50/50 raffle and bake sale will be available. T-shirts ($10) and keychains ($5) will be sold to support the cause. In addition to the dinner, cash and check donations are being accepted at all Farmers National Bank locations. Checks can be made payable to the Valerie Boston Benefit Fund.

Saxon Club hosts last pork dinner of the year

The next Saxon Club Pork-Kraut dinner will be Nov. 21 from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The price of $8.50 ($5 for children) includes dessert and coffee, tea or pop.

The public is welcome and takeouts are available.

HMHP new MyChart program for patients

Patients of Humility of Mary Health Partners (HMHP) physicians are now able to schedule their next appointment, receive test results, refill prescriptions and contact their doctors via the Internet.

It’s called MyChart and is all part of the new electronic health record (EHR) launched at all HMHP ambulatory care sites Nov. 1. Patients can sign-up for MyChart right in their doctor’s office.

Christmas at the DQ

The Dairy Queen in Cornersburg, 3555 S. Meridian Road, is celebrating the holiday season Dec. 3-5 with special treats and activites.

On Dec. 3 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., a live reindeer will be on display and Santa arrives by fire truck at 5 p.m. On Dec. 4 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., children can visit with Santa and eat free with the purchase of a value meal. At 5 p.m., there will be live holiday jazz music, followed by an ice sculpture shaving at 6 p.m.

On Dec. 5 at 2 p.m., there will be holiday caroling and at 2:30 p.m. another ice sculpture carving.

Health at Home Program teaches self-care

St. Elizabeth Health Center, 1044 Belmont Ave., Youngstown, will host a Health at Home Æ program.

All participants receive a free copy of the book, an easy read with instructions for more than 200 health problems.

The program will run from 11 a.m. to noon and 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., Nov. 30 at St. Elizabeth Health Center, 1044 Belmont Ave., Youngstown.

New site for shoe boxes

Tabernacle E.P. Church, 2432 S. Raccoon Road, is the new ‘Relay Center’ for Operation Christmas Child in the Austintown area.

Mulholland Hall, the church’s social hall, will be used to collect ‘Shoe Boxes’ during National Collection Week until Monday

Shoe box drop-off hours are Saturday noon to 6 p.m.; Sunday 1 to 5 p.m. and Monday 9 to 11 a.m.

The Audubon Society is inviting the public to “Birds of the Past, Present and Future” at MetroParks Farm, state Route 46 in Canfield Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Jeff Harvey, president of the Audubon Society Mahoning Valley will discuss bird species that are extinct and why, plus what present-day birds may be at risk.

Yoga for a cure hosted by Humility Health of Mary

Humility Health of Mary Partners will host Yoga for a Cure today from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Woodlands, 1525 E. Western Reserve Road in Poland.

Yogis and Yoginnis from around town will hold classes at all levels and a yoga-thon will raise money for the new Comprehensive Breast Care Center being constructed at St. Elizabeth’s downtown,

There will be vendors in jewelry and accessories and living food demonstrations will be presented by Master Chef Na Young.

The cost for yoga classes will be $15 for one or two for $25.

Angels for Animals, 4750 state Route 165 in Canfield, will host its seventh annual Antiques and Holiday Decoration Show Dec. 3-5.

Admission is $5 for the Dec. 3 preview from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. and free for the Dec. 4, 10 am. to 3 p.m. and Dec. 5, noon to 4 p.m. shows.

Reflections program looking for applicants

Austintown PTAs are accepting entries for the 2010/2011 Reflections program.

Children in preschool through grade 12 can create and submit works of art in six areas: literature, visual arts, photography, dance choreography, film/video and musical composition.

The Reflections program allows PTAs throughout the state to recognize children for their creativity in portraying yearly themes. This year’s theme is “Together We Can.”

AARP meeting planned

The Austintown AARP, a group that has been serving the community for more than 20 years, is still going strong. The group meets on the second Tuesday of each month at Grace Lutheran Church. The organization is known for its bus tours and entertaining at nursing homes through its choir.

Old-fashioned Christmas at the Mill

Mill Creek MetroParks Lanterman’s Mill will be decked out in holiday finery for the Old-fashioned Christmas at the Mill event Nov. 27 and 28 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Taste chestnuts roasted over an open fire, give Santa your wish list, purchase unique gifts, watch artisans demonstrate crafts like weaving, pottery, blacksmithing and wood carving, and be entertained by a juggler, a balloon artist, and many musicians.

If you wish to share the holiday spirit with others, bring a hat, scarf, or pair of mittens to decorate a “Giving Tree.” Donated items will be given to children in need from Mahoning County this winter.
