St. Columba Cathedral, 154 W. Wood St., will present the annual Advent Service of Lessons and Carols at 7 p.m. Nov. 28.
The Cathedral Choir, under the direction of Dr. Daniel Laginya, will feature motets and carols of Polish origin in commemoration of the merger of St. Columba and St. Casimir parishes.
A reception will follow in the Cathedral Hall.
Lessons and carols

St. John’s Episcopal Church, 323 Wick Ave., will present an Advent service of Lessons and Carols at 4 p.m. Nov. 28 featuring the prophecies and music of Advent.
Based on a service originating at King’s College, Cambridge, St. John’s has added its own touches to the service. Beginning with the traditional “I look from afar” sung at the rear of the nave (darkness) the service progresses toward the high altar (light) where the final responsory and closing prayers take place.
Lessons herald the coming Nativity and carols will be sung by the choir and congregation.
Bereavement talk

“Getting Through the Holidays after the Loss of a Loved One” will be presented at 7 p.m. Dec. 1 in Marian Hall of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 381 Robbins Ave., by its Bereavement Ministry.
Speaker will be James Baer, an ordained Baptist minister and funeral director.
Participants are asked to bring photos of loved ones.
Refreshments will follow the free presentation.

Candlelight walk

The Ursuline Center, 4280 Shields Road, will host an Advent candlelight labyrinth walk at 6 p.m. Nov. 28. Dress according to the weather.
After the walk, participants will gather in the atrium for conversation and a glass of hot cider or hot chocolate.
Ecumenical parish
mineral ridge
The Mineral Ridge Ecumenical Parish collected and distributed groceries to Mineral Ridge families in need. These churches work together throughout the year to address the needs to local families who are struggling financially.
Member churches are St. Mary’s Catholic, Church of Christ, Ohltown United Methodist, First Presbyterian Church and Grace Church of the Nazarene.
This year, the parish partnered with Seaborn Elementary and Mineral Ridge Middle School to provide food for more than 40 families in the community.
Choir anniversary

The New Generation Choir of Phillips Memorial Missionary Baptist Church, 1407 Victor Ave., will mark its anniversary at 4 p.m. Nov. 28. Other church youth and adult choirs, soloists, praise dancers and mimes may participate.
Diocesan guild

The Diocesan Infant Jesus of Prague Guild will meet Dec. 1 for its Christmas gathering in St. Christine Church, 3165 Schenley Ave. The rosary will be at 9:30 a.m. and Mass at 10.
The cost is $14. Reservation deadline is Monday.

The Pastor’s Aide Ministry of Mount Zion Baptist Church, 827 Wilson Ave., will celebrate its annual Day of Recognition program at 3 p.m. Nov. 28. Guests will be Youngstown Mayor Jay Williams, Girard Mayor James Melfi and Rep. Tim Ryan. Guest speaker will be Pastor Kenneth Paramore of Christian Revival and Discipleship Center.
Vigil for life

In union with His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI at St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome, Bishop George V. Murry will celebrate a “Vigil for All Nascent Human Life” on Nov. 27 in St. Columba Cathedral, 154 W. Wood St.
Coinciding with First Vespers of the First Sunday of Advent, the worldwide vigil for the unborn will begin locally at 4 p.m. with Exposition and Adoration of the Most Blessed Sacrament, evening prayer at 4:30 and Mass at 5:30.
Concert set

Ellsworth Presbyterian Church at the intersection of Route 224 and Ellsworth Road, will present Julia and Tia Ciferno in concert at 7 p.m. Nov. 28, the first Sunday of Advent. A love offering will be taken afyer the service. A social hour will follow in fellowship hall. CDs will be available for purchase.
Lectures planned

Lectures on “Help and Healing on the Spiritual Path through the Teachings of Bruno Groening” are planned at 6 p.m. Nov. 30 and Dec. 21 at, but not affiliated with, Lord of Life Lutheran Church, 550 N. Broad St. (Route 46).
The lectures will be about 90 minutes.

Ignatian retreat

The retreat in daily life is for busy people with many responsibilities, who are searching for something more in life and desire to develop a personal relationship with God.
This retreat requires 30-45 minutes of your time once each week for eight weeks in the company of a spiritual director who will help you to discover how to tap into your own personal relationship with Jesus and 30 minutes daily private time for personal prayer.
The meetings will be at the Ursuline Motherhouse.

The first pastoral anniversary of the Rev. Samuel G. Holmes Jr. of Greater Ebenezer Baptist Church, 1232 Hill St., will be observed at 3:30 p.m. Sunday.
Guest speaker will be the Rev. William H. Wilson of St. Peter’s Baptist Church.
Youth outreach

Kingdom Community Church, 7907 Lee Run Road, is planning its first youth outreach program at 11 a.m. Nov. 27.
The ongoing program, Reap & Sew, is coordinated by Jeannie Rohrbaugh, volunteer.
The program will teach youth basic sewing techniques such as repairing rips, buttons, hemming and progressing to creating their own fashions.
The group is planning a Christmas project of making “knot blankets” for children in Mahoning Valley Akron Children’s Hospital. Other projects will be planned as the group increases in number.
The group also will decorate cookies to be donated to Rescue Mission of Mahoning Valley.
Sessions will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. the second and fourth Saturday of the month.
