Elderly North Jackson man gets prison time on sex charge with girl

YOUNGSTOWN — A North Jackson family says they have felt like prisoners in their own home, but they will now get a four-year reprieve as the man convicted of inappropriately touching their daughter was led away in handcuffs.

John Hartman, 75, of New Road, appeared today before Judge John Durkin of Mahoning County Common Pleas Court for sentencing on a charge of gross sexual imposition involving an 8-year-old girl.

Hartman pleaded guilty to the charge in a plea agreement with prosecutors in early October.

The girl’s mother said Hartman, who lives next door to the family, earlier this year offered her daughter cookies, had the young child sit on his lap and told her she would someday be a pretty girl as he reached into her pants.
