BOARDMAN

Mike and Patty Griffin of Austintown received the Mahoning County Unit of the American Cancer Society’s 2010 Volunteer of the Year Award at the organization’s annual Volunteer Recognition Dinner.

The dinner was at Rusty’s Southside Grill. Recognized were volunteers who helped with fund-raising events, education programs, advocacy activities and office mailings or as a board member or who assisted in other areas,

The cost was underwritten by Farmers National Bank.

Other award recipients are: Shellie Warino of Mineral Ridge, Health Promotions Mission Delivery Award; Jennifer Weaver of North Jackson, Income Development Mission Support Award; and Amy Lunne of Canfield, Nurse of Hope Award.

The Volunteer of the Year Award was presented to the Griffins in appreciation for the many hours they spent helping to organize the society’s booth at the Canfield Fair. They also volunteered at other ACS special events, such as the Cattle Baron’s Ball and the Boardman Relay.

Mike Griffin also helped with various tasks regularly at the office in Canfield and is a member of the Austintown Relay Committee.

Warino has been a volunteer with ACS since 2008 and a Mahoning County board director since 2009.

In 2010, she served as the Quality of Life Mission chairwoman. She is conducting a focus group for the cancer society’s “Reach to Recovery” program as part of her master’s degree program and is a facilitator of ACS’ “I Can Cope” program.

Weaver served as the Austintown Relay For Life chairwoman in 2010 and is team captain of the Austintown Community Church team for the relay.

In 2010, the Austintown Relay raised $100,192, exceeding its goal of $72,000.

Lunne received the Nurse of Hope Award because she is a dependable and compassionate person who, on her days off from work, transports cancer patients to and from their medical treatment appointments as part of the cancer society’s “Road to Recovery” program.

Corlis Green of Youngstown has completed the second year of her two-year term as president of the board. Donna Detwiler is the incoming board president.

“The success of any organization, such as ours, starts and ends with volunteers,” said Jo-Ann Crank, vice president of the Northeast Ohio Region American Cancer Society.

“Their efforts enable us to continue to fund cancer research in Ohio and across the United States as well as provide a number of free services to cancer patients in the area.”
