Anderson, 8241 S. Raccoon Road, Canfield. This farm was founded in 1809 when Abraham Kline bought 260 acres, raised grain and drove cattle. Eventually owned by Raymond and Nelda Anderson and is now managed by their son, Wayne.
Brungard, 4653 Middletown Road, New Middletown, 1832. Johan and Barbary Brungard bought 150 acres in Springfield Township after having arrived in a covered wagon that was stored in a barn on the property until 1970. In the early 1980s, two family members started raising produce and selling it at a market on their farm. They also use original equipment to tap 50 original maple trees to make maple syrup.
Ruggles, 10750 Blott Road, North Jackson, 1839. Bill Handwork settled on 86 acres, then a relative took over the farm and raised six children, one of whom married Frank Ruggles. Today, Ruggles family members farm more than 200 acres, including the original 86.
Burton, 14632 W. South Range Road, Goshen Township, 1840. Samuel and Abigail Burton bought 160 acres and raised their 11 children. A descendent lives in the original house built in 1849 and still raises cattle and hogs.
Haase, 9800 Felger Road, New Middletown, 1866. Original 77 acres were bought for $1,347. Farm has been passed down several times and is owned by Zonda and Kim Haase, who live in a 12-room house built in 1896. Farm has 75 of the original acres and is used mainly for producing corn and soybeans.
White House Fruit Farm, 9249 Youngstown-Salem Road, Canfield, 1874. Over the years, generations of the Baird family raised cattle and field crops. In 1967, the fruit farm was incorporated; in the 1990s members of the Hull family concentrated on the retail farm market, which is widely known for its homegrown fruits and vegetables, as well as bakery, deli and specialty foods on the 200-acre farm.
Moore, 7393 Western Reserve Road, Canfield, 1885. Urban and Marietta Moore settled on 75 acres in Green Township that featured, among other things, a milking facility, a smokehouse and a retail meat store. Several family members continue to operate the farm.
Slagle, 6920 W. Pine Lake Road, Green Township, 1885. Jonas Slagle settled on 125 acres, then increased his acreage to 320. Generations of family raised vegetables, built two ponds for irrigation and sold produce at farm markets in Youngstown three times a week. The family eventually grew and sold pumpkins.
Phillis, 14704 W. Middletown Road, Beloit, 1906. George and Annie Phillis raised sheep, pigs, horses, cattle and chickens on 164 acres. For more than 50 years, the family has shown cattle at the Canfield Fair.
Woolman, 8560 Bedell Road, Berlin Center, 1907. Clyde Woolman and his wife, Zella, bought and sold horses and, during the 1930s and 1940s, hosted horse auctions and sales exchanges. In 1957, their son bought the land and began a commercial dairy operation. Another generation of the family bought the farm in 1993 and grow small grains and hay on nearly 50 of the original acres.
