Kevin Merritt, husband of Youngstown State University geography faculty member Dawna Cerney, recently flew a U.S. flag on behalf of the Department of Geography on a reserve mission to East Africa.

Merritt, a reservist who was temporarily stationed in Germany, is a C130 flight engineer out of Vienna Reserve Air Base.

He flew a flag specifically for the Department of Geography on an expeditionary mission out of a base in Djibouti for more than 1,000 statute miles to Kenya.

Over the summer, Merritt participated in many missions flown across Eastern Africa and generally in the Middle East.

The Department of Geography was presented with the flag and a Horn of Africa plaque with certificate which has been mounted prominently in the department.
