YSU LIVE | Penguins trail 23-17 at halftime
The YSU football team trails Indiana State 23-17 in the second quarter of Saturday's game at Stambaugh Stadium.
Stephen Blose hit a 19-yard field goal with 7:27 left in the second quarter, capping a 10-play, 46 yards drive that chewed up four minutes on the clock.
The drive stalled at the Sycamores' 2. On third-and-goal, the Penguins opted to try a quick out pass rather than run inside and it fell incomplete.
Indiana State had 63-yard pass wiped out by a holding penalty on its ensuing drive but it didn't matter. The Sycamores drove 69 with Ronnie Fouch hitting Bryant Kent on a 11-yard slant with 1:45 left in the quarter.
YSU brought a blitz and Indiana State beat it with a throw over the middle. This has only happened, oh, 536 times this season. The Sycamores then converted the two-point conversion on a -- wait for it -- pass over the middle.
On the ensuing drive, YSU QB Hess threw an awful interception over the middle that was returned to the Penguins' 21. Fouch then broke free for a quarterback run through the -- wait for it -- middle of the YSU defense but was upended near the goal line, where the ball was jarred loose and recovered by the Penguins for a touchback.
Rough first half for YSU, particularly its secondary. The Penguins shifted their best corner, Brandian Ross, to safety early in the half but it hasn't made much difference.
