Music abounds and the evening sparkles for First Night Canfield 2011’s button.

Designed by Natalie McClune, a junior at Canfield High School, the image caught the eye of the board because of its colors and the happy feeling it depicts.

“When we discovered it was done by a Canfield High School student, we were even more impressed,” stated Executive Director Suzanne Heino. “We are so fortunate to have amazing talent within the youth of our community.”

McClune created several designs for the button; this one was chosen because of the use of the gazebo (an element in every button design) and the focus of the arts.

Equally impressive, was that she’s only been designing items for two years. Her interests include working with theater sets, costumes, as well as gardening. She’s working toward inclusion in the National Honor Society and is a member of the Youth Group Ministry at St. Michael’s Church.

She says her inspiration behind the design was to “make it a bright style, with no borders and playful.”

“We’re very fortunate to have had Natalie’s button submission to continue the youth involvement,” Heino said. “Our goal is to have the youth involved in as many facets of the event as possible, from performing to including them in the event planning process.”

Youth and community are the common elements that continue to resound with planning the 13-year-old event. When First Night Canfield was established in 1998, the board insisted that they not charge for kids 18 and under to ensure that everyone can celebrate the evening in a safe, fun environment.

This continues to this day and among 100 other First Night events nationwide, Canfield is the only one to have this policy. This in turn has offered a whole generation of youth to grow up having a sense of community.
