Eastern Gateway Community College students, faculty and staff will stage a wing-eating contest Saturday to benefit the United Way of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley.
Beginning at noon, contestants will chow down at Buffalo Wild Wings, 50 E. Federal St. Contestants are finding sponsors who will pay 50 cents to $1 per wing with the proceeds going to the United Way.
The participant with the most sponsors will be recognized with a gift valued at $50. The contest winner will receive a $100 gas card. Those dining that day with an Eastern Gateway coupon from Wild Wings will see 15 percent of the proceeds donated to the UW. The public is invited to the event.
Man killed in crash
new castle, pa.
A man is dead after a traffic accident Thursday at the intersection of Mill and Division streets. Lawrence County Coroner Russell Noga is investigating whether the 70-year-old man, whose name he did not have available, died as a result of trauma from the accident or as the result of a medical event that happened before it.
The man’s car was broadsided at the intersection by a pickup truck at 8:30 a.m., Noga said. He was pronounced dead at 9:08 a.m. at Jameson Hospital.
A woman behind the wheel in the pickup truck also was taken to Jameson. There were no other details available at press time. Noga said he will know more today about why the man died.
Tree planting
YOUNGSTOWN
A tree planting and fundraiser for a local nonprofit are planned for Saturday. The planting begins at 4 p.m. in Wick Park, and the Treez Please fundraiser is from 5 to 10 p.m. at First Unitarian Church, 1105 Elm St. Treez Please is a nonprofit organization that works to increase green space in the city. Hunter injured
WEST MIDDLESEX, pa.
A hunter who fell 24 feet out of a tree stand had a dislocated shoulder and a cracked hip, said Bill Williams, Shenango Township fire chief. Williams would not release the name of the hunter, who is a volunteer firefighter.
The accident happened at 5 p.m. in woods near Stony Hill and Burrows roads, Williams said.
The hunter called Williams on his cell phone, and Williams sent the department, he said. The man was taken by helicopter to St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown.
