VNA clinic, shots

The Visiting Nurse Association’s November free health screening clinic is from 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday at 518 E. Indianola Ave. Screenings include weight, blood pressure, blood sugar and medication review. There also will be a presentation on funeral pre-planning by Paul McCauley, director of the McCauley Funeral Home. No appointment is needed. VNA also is offering seasonal flu and pneumonia shots with no appointment necessary from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday during November. The cost of the flu vaccine is $20, or Medicare and Anthem Senior Advantage are accepted. Children age 9 and over may receive the flu vaccine if they have an order from their physician. The cost of the pneumonia vaccine is $45, or Medicare is accepted.

Work day planned

The Youngstown Neighborhood Development Corp. is having a neighborhood work day Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. People who want to help board up a vacant home, plant perennials and clean up and complete several small projects are asked to meet at the former Mr. Paul’s Bakery at the corner of Glenwood and Parkview Avenues at 9 a.m. for orientation. Open house set

The public is invited to an open house Friday from 4 to 6 p.m. at St. Elizabeth Family Health Care, 5533 Mahoning Ave. at the corner of Mahoning and state Route 46 in Austintown. Visitors will meet the physicians and staff, tour the office and have refreshments.

Radon test kits

AUSTINTOWN

The Mahoning County District Board of Health is offering coupons for free radon test kits to Mahoning County residents.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, Mahoning County homes have a moderate potential for having elevated levels of radon, which is a radioactive gas that cannot been seen, smelled or tasted.

Call Nick Cascarelli at 330-270-2855, ext. 138 for additional information about the program or to schedule a time to pick up a coupon. The coupons are provided by and redeemable to the Ohio Department of Health. Once ODH receives the coupon sent by the resident, a free radon test kit will be mailed back to the resident.

Gov. Ted Strickland has declared November to be “Home Care and Hospice Month in Ohio.” Last year, more than 43,000 patients and their families received services in an estimated 120 hospice programs in Ohio.
