NEW CASTLE

Dr. Cindy LaCom, New Castle resident and director of Women’s Studies and professor of English at Slippery Rock University, was one of fifteen people across the country to receive the Sunshine Lady Peace Award.

The prestigious award is given to extraordinary individuals who make a difference in the field of domestic violence prevention and recognize the influence of grass-roots organizations in facilitating the social change necessary to stop violence against women and children.

The Crisis Shelter of Lawrence County, where Dr. LaCom served as a board member and volunteer for more than 10 years, nominated Dr. LaCom for the award.

She received $5,000 to use at her discretion in her work to end violence against women. She plans to use the money to develop a Women’s Studies Internship in Ghana.

The Crisis Shelter also received $5,000 to aid women and children escaping domestic violence.
