Elizabeth Smart finishes trial testimony

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — On her third and final day of testifying, Elizabeth Smart told jurors her alleged abductor was a crude, self-serving person who used religion to justify his actions.

She testified in the trial of Brian David Mitchell, an itinerant street preacher accused of taking her from her home knifepoint in 2002 when she was 14.

Mitchell faces life in prison if he’s convicted in federal court of kidnapping and unlawful transportation of a minor across state lines.

His defense attorneys contend he suffers from an escalating mental illness and holds extreme religious beliefs.

Smart says Mitchell only used religion to get what he wanted from others.

She finished her testimony today after just 15 minutes of cross-examination by the defense.
