New boards of trustees have been appointed for Northside Medical Center, Trumbull Memorial Hospital and Hillside Rehabilitation Hospital, the major components of the Forum Health hospital system.

The bankrupt Forum Health was purchased in October by Community Health Services, a for-profit health-care company. The Valley health network, however, is keeping Forum Health as its name.

The trustees, composed of area residents, half of whom are physicians from each hospital’s medical staff and others who are leaders in each hospital’s community, will serve in a primarily advisory capacity, said David Fikse, chief executive officer of Northside Medical Center and the entire hospital system. The same board of trustees will serve TMH and Hillside, he said.

The advisory role of the new trustees contrasts with the decision-making role of trustees of the former nonprofit Forum Health.

Members of the Northside trustees board are Dr. Joni S. Canby, obstetrics/gynecology; Dr. Peter M. DeVito, general surgeon; Dr. Lawrence Goldstein, pulmonologist; Sandford Kessler, executive director, Jewish Community Center; Dr. Michael Miladore, orthopedic surgeon; Joseph L. Mosca, Ph.D., dean, Youngstown State University; Clifford Scott, executive director, Youngstown Metropolitan Housing Authority; Dr. James F. Shina, internal medicine; Karen Stacey, executive director, Leadership Mahoning Valley; Barbara Tinkham, community volunteer; and Dr. Paul Watanakunakorn, internal medicine.

Members of the TMH/Hillside board are: Dr. Jean A. Cairns, obstetrics/gynecology; Stan Feret, senior vice president of lending, Cortland Bank; Kathryn Hellweg, Ph.D., superintendent, Warren City Schools; Dr. Lori C. Hemrock, hematologist/oncologist; Dr. Thomas B. Jones Jr., orthopedic surgeon; Dr. Leonard Kanterman, internal medicine; David Kostolansky, retired president, Schaefer Equipment; Mayor Michael J. O’Brien of Warren; Susan Ozanich, community volunteer; Dr. Beverly L. Roberts-Atwater, D.O. and Ph.D., medical director, Hillside Rehabilitation Hospital; Diane Sauer, president, Diane Sauer Chevrolet; Dr. Yogesh O. Sheth, internal medicine; and Dr. James M. Sudimack, emergency medicine.

The new boards will organize and officers will be named in the near future, said Fikse, who conducted the selection process along with Robert Wolleben, CEO of TMH; Marilyn Titus, chief operating officer of Hillside; and Michael Seelman, Northside COO.

Trustees’ responsibilities include developing a strategic plan for the hospital; participating in development and review of operating and capital budgets; fostering relationships and identifying opportunities for community service; supporting physician-recruitment efforts; and fostering community relationships and identifying community-service opportunities.

“These are highly-committed individuals,” Fikse said about the caliber of people selected for the boards. “Their leadership roles in our community and on our medical staffs will provide the hospitals with invaluable insights.”
