Kent jazz ensemble to give free concert

SALEM

The Kent State Jazz Ensemble, featuring top performers in the Kent State School of Music, will give a free concert at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Kent-City Center auditorium, 230 N. Lincoln Ave. The big band ensemble is under the direction of Chas Bake. The program will include music by Duke Ellington, Cole Porter, George Gershwin, Oliver Nelson, Count Basie and more. The band will be joined by vocalist Maria Jacobs on several numbers. The ensemble has won Outstanding Band awards at collegiate jazz festivals, and has also performed at the Montreaux Jazz Festival in Switzerland.

First Night plans Gobbler’s Run

First Night Youngstown’s Gobbler’s Run will be Nov. 13, with the fun run/walk at 8:45 a.m. and the 5-mile run at 9 a.m. Same-day registration and packet pick-up begins at 7:45 a.m. in the Commerce Building parking lot, at the corner of Commerce and Walnut streets, downtown. The course will loop through downtown Youngstown. Entry Fee is $15 in advance, $20 for same-day registration ($10 for ages 13-19; $5 for children 12 and under). The age categories are: men and women 19 and under, 20-39, 40-59 and 60 and up. Prizes will be awarded.
