A Day to Honor OUR Military Heroes

The muffled drum’s sad roll has beat

The soldier’s last tattoo;

No more on Life’s parade shall meet

That brave and fallen few.

On fame’s eternal camping ground

Their silent tents to spread,

And glory guards, with solemn round,

The bivouac of the dead.

According to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, this, the first stanza of Theodore O’Hara’s poem “Bivouac of the Dead,” is found on McClellan Gate, the original entrance to Arlington National Cemetery. In 2001, the National Cemetery Administration began installing new cast- aluminum plaques featuring the stanza in all the national cemeteries as well as national cemeteries under development as a way to honor fallen military heroes.

O’Hara’s poem was first read as a memorial 160 years ago in 1850 at a dedication of a monument to mark the many casualties suffered by the 2nd Kentucky Regiment of Foot Volunteers who fought at the Battle of Buena Vista in February 1847.
