Singing competition at fireworks festival

NEW CASTLE, PA.

The Fireworks Festival will host Fireworks Idol, a singing competition, with the winner receiving a cash prize, plaque and the opportunity to sing the national anthem at Mercer Raceway Park this summer.

Singers from Lawrence County and the surrounding area can audition at 6:30 p.m. June 9 at Stage 3 in the Cascade Riverplex, downtown. Singers should bring accompanying music on a CD and be prepared to perform up to two songs.

Spectators are welcome to attend June 9 and cast a vote for their favorite singer. Admission is $1. Three judges plus audience votes will determine which six singers will advance to the finals, which will be at the Fireworks Festival July 10. Each finalist will sing at the festival and the champion will be crowned.

Singers can register in advance. The entry fee is $10, and the total amount of fees collected will be awarded as prize money to the top three finalists. Vintage Vinyl Night with Viking Jim

Youngstownrock.com and Indie Wax Records of Boardman will present Vintage Vinyl Night at 8 p.m. Thursday at University Pizzeria, 133 Lincoln Ave. Radio personality Viking Jim of 93.3-The Wolf’s “Homegrown Show” will spin vintage records from the Indie Wax collection, as well as from the local musicians featured on The Homegrown Show (9 p.m. Sunday). Guests are encouraged to bring their own records to the party.

‘Miss Saigon’ at CLO

PITTSBURGH

Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera will present “Miss Saigon” from June 8 to 20 at Benedum Center.

“Miss Saigon” is a love story about the relationship between an American GI and a young Vietnamese woman, set in the final days of the American occupation of Saigon.
