Happy 101st birthday, Sally Johnson!

Birthdate: May 20, 1909

Birthplace: Valley Forge, Tenn.

Family: The youngest of eight children, Sally became the mother of eight children and then the stepmother to eight more children when she married Aaron Johnson during the Great Depression.

Memories: Sally remembers World War I, the influenza epidemic of 1918, Women’s Suffrage, the invention of the automobile, “talkies” (movies with sound), World War II, invention of television, the Korean War, Vietnam, men landing on the moon and the Internet.

Interests: She always enjoyed keeping a vegetable garden, preserving produce through canning and making jams, jellies and apple butter.

Home: Mrs. Johnson moved to Shepherd of the Valley-Niles community in 2008 and calls the staff her “neighbors, because that’s someone who is friendly, helpful and looks out for you.”

Celebration: A birthday observance took place May 20 at Shepherd of the Valley- Niles with family members and friends attending.
