Wright Brass performs with Canfield bands

Neighbors | Submitted.The Canfield High School Concert and Symphonic bands performed May 20. The concert was a showcase for graduating senior band members to perform solos in various numbers with the symphonic band. .John Vagas, David Gabrieli and Peter Zelinka were featured soloists.

The Wright Brass, one of the four classical chamber ensembles within the United States Air Force Band of Flight, spent two days with the Canfield middle and high school bands.

The members of the ensemble conducted workshops, practiced and performed with the bands from the middle school under the direction of Jim Volenik and Marc Pupino, as well as the concert and symphonic bands of the high school under the direction of Michael Kelly.

The students learned about the Air Force, serving in the military, being in a military band and performing all around the world as ambassadors of the United States and the U.S. Air Force. They attended workshops with the ensemble and practiced with them.

The Wright Brass performed with the respective bands as well as put on their own signature performance May 20.

The May 21 concert featured the high school concert and symphonic bands.

As is tradition in Canfield, the spring concert was a showcase of graduating senior band members performing solos in various numbers with the symphonic band.

This year’s concert featured John Vagas on violin playing the theme from “Schindler’s List” by John Williams, David Gabrieli on flute playing “The Carnival of Venice” by Giulio Briccialdi and Peter Zelinka on clarinet playing “Adagio-Tarantella” by Ernesto Cavallini.

The final number of the evening was the singing of the alma mater by the graduating senior band members.

The Wright Brass closed out the concerts with its signature performance. Their repertoire ranged from classical to patriotic to rock and roll.

The high school bands’ next performance is Monday on the Green in Canfield followed by marching in the Fourth of July parade.
