Wrestlers earn honors at Tournament of Champions

Austintown wrestlers from the youth, middle school and high school wrestling programs participated in the 2010 Ohio Tournament of Champions (TOC) in Columbus Apr. 24 and 25.
The individual portion of TOC is the largest one-day amateur wrestling event in the world. It’s a national wrestling event held in the Columbus Convention Center using 28 wrestling mats and having 2,600 participants from all over the country. Wrestlers fight for a top seven finish out of a 64-man bracket.
In order of age division, the following wrestlers participated: Alex Herman (Bantam), Drew Fairbanks (Junior), Anthony Moffo (Junior), Alex Mackall (Schoolboy), Adam Green (Schoolboy), Zach Mackall (Schoolboy), Taylor Balog (Schoolboy), Luke Peterson (Cadet), Antoine Davis (Cadet), Korey Balog (Cadet), Rick Ague (Cadet), R.J. Balog (Elite) and Shawn Ague (Elite).
Alex Mackall and Davis finished in seventh place and Ague captured the championship with a technical fall over his opponent in the final match.
With honorable mention honors were Herman and Zach Mackall, who missed the medal round by one match.
Alex Mackall, Moffo, Zach Mackall and Peterson also competed in the TOC team duals portion of the tournament in the middle school public division for Team EOWL with several wrestlers from Canfield, Howland and Poland.
The team was coordinated by Steve Demaiolo and Jason Neapolitan of Canfield. Team EOWL placed third in the individual points portion and third in the dual meet portion.
