1-room schoolhouse opens for season
MERCER, PA.
The Caldwell one-room school, on Mercer-Greenville Road between Mercer and Greenville, will open for the season Sunday. It will be open from 1 to 5 p.m. Sundays through Labor Day, according to a press release from the Mercer County Historical Society. Admission is free.
The school houses artifacts, books and other memorabilia that tell the story of how rural Americans were educated prior to the consolidation of schools in the mid-1900s. The schoolhouse was previously under the direction of the late Mae “Joannie Appleseed” Beringer, who, along with her husband, Harry, welcomed guests on Sundays for more than 40 years. Mrs. Beringe died this winter at age 100, so members of the Mercer County chapter of Pennsylvania School Retirees (MCPASR) are staffing the schoolhouse.
For more information, or to schedule a group tour on a day other than Sunday, call 724-662-3490.
