Mooney speech team going to nationals

The Cardinal Mooney Speech Team made an impressive showing at the Northern Ohio National Forensic League qualifying tournament.

Eight members of the team qualified to compete at the National Forensic League Tournament in Kansas City in June.

Mooney coach April Sauline said the eight qualifiers is the “largest contingent representing any school in Ohio.” The Northern Ohio National Forensic League qualifying tournament was held at Boardman High School in February.

Three Mooney qualifiers won district titles: Patrick Hobby and Carly Carano from Poland placed first in Duo Interpretation with a cutting titled “The Boy Who Fell Into the Book.” In addition, Riaz Fabian from Youngstown took top honors in United States Extemporaneous Speaking.

Lauren Tonti from Austintown took second in International Extemporaneous Speaking and Mark Warchol of Poland placed second in Dramatic Interpretation.

Preston Caldwell from Poland and Madeline Kopper from Struthers teamed up to take third-place honors in Duo Interpretation with a cutting titled “Around the World in a Bad Mood.”

Michael Rotar of Boardman ranked third in United States Extemporaneous Speaking.

Will Engler, Lizzie Hanna and Taylor Marconi have been named alternates for the national tournament.

As a team, Mooney finished first in individual events and received the 2010 Denny Barrett Memorial Award in recognition for the “most competitive rounds” in district competition.
